Medical
Tips
1.
Are steroids safe for my asthma ?
People
with asthma can use a preventer that contains
low dose inhaled steroids. Sometimes you
may experience local side effects such as
a hoarse voice or sore throat. The doses
of inhaled steroid is much smaller than
a steroid tablet. Occasionally, if asthma
symptoms are severe the doctor may prescribe
a short course of steroid tablets. There
should not cause any long-term side effects.
However, if you have very severe asthma
and need to take steroid tablets for a long
period of time there may be side effects
such as thinning of the bones or weight
gaining, diabetes mellitus, hypertension,
recurrent infection. |

2. Will my child grow out of asthma ?
 |
About
one in three children with
asthma seem to become symptom
free by the time they are
adults. Some persons may find
that their symptoms become
milder. Unfortunately, it
is not possible to predict
which children will improve
or deteriorate. In general,
children who have mild asthma
are more likely to be free
of symptoms when they grow
up but this is not guaranteed.
|
|
Some
people find that their asthma improves when
they are teenagers but comes back again
when they are adults. Although there is
no guarantee that symptoms will go away,
they can usually be well controlled in 90%
of cases. Asthma should not be left untreated
in hope that yours child will grow out of
it, otherwise it may affect the growth of
children. Appropriate treatment, on the
advice of the doctor and avoidance of trigger
factors will help to control your child’s
symptom. |
3.
Will moving to another area help to reduce or
stop my asthma ?
Asthma
varies from one person to another. A place that
agrees with one person may not be so good for
another. Your own personal experience will give
you clues as to what triggers your asthma. Pollution
can be a trigger for some people but it is only
one of many things that can cause asthma. Some
triggers may be found indoors, where we spend
most of our time especially house dust mites,
which will be found wherever you live. Most people
with asthma have more than one triggers, it is
possible that by changing places you may be exchanging
from one trigger to another. Sometimes people
feel better in a new area for a short while and
then become sensitive to triggers that they find
there. Except in a few circumstances, such as
living in a damp housing, there seems little to
be gained from moving places. Changing from cold
climate to dry hot climate may suit for somebody
but not for all.
