Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damages the optic nerve caused by high pressure in the eyes. Eye glaucoma treatment is necessary, and if left untreated, it can cause vision loss and might also lead to blindness.
The symptoms of glaucoma depend on the type or stage of the patient's condition.
Family history of glaucoma age >40 years should undergo glaucoma evaluation every year.
From the application of eye drops to different surgeries, the glaucoma specialist may prescribe the following glaucoma treatments depending on the severity of the patients’ condition:
Laser surgery can help raise the flow of fluid from the eye if you are undergoing an open-angle glaucoma treatment. Alternatively, it can stop the fluid blockages if you are under angle-closure glaucoma treatment. The procedures include:
Acute glaucoma treatment needs microsurgery called trabeculectomy. Performed in a special glaucoma eye hospital, the glaucoma specialist will drain out the fluid to ease the eye pressure by creating a new channel in the white area of the eye (sclera). The surgery typically needs to be performed more than once as the doctor implants a tube to drain out the fluid.
MIGS is another procedure to bring down eye pressure; it has a lesser risk as compared to trabeculectomy or placing a drainage device. This procedure also requires less postoperative care and is mostly combined with cataract surgeries. There are several MIGS techniques and procedures that a glaucoma specialist will discuss with the patient before the treatment.

I had visited Sri Ramakrishna Hospital for an eye check-up thinking I will be prescribed glasses but my doctor suspected glaucoma. After certain examinations, he said that my optic nerve didn’t seem right! I had lived with glaucoma for many years, but now after a recent surgery, it has been controlled. I am thankful to the team of doctors at Sri Ramakrishna Hospital.
Today, I can read comfortably, my vision doesn't blur and the eyes do not tire like before. Thank you, Sri Ramakrishna Hospital for restoring my eyes! I had gone to them as I had complaints of red and watery eyes. Later I was diagnosed with glaucoma. I am thankful to the doctors who started my treatment without any delay and made all the procedures seem so easy.
How does open-angle glaucoma treatment work?
There are several treatments for open-angle glaucoma that focus on lowering eye pressure. Open-angle glaucoma treatment includes the use of eye drops, trabeculoplasty (a laser procedure that helps in improving the drainage of fluid present in the eye; the procedure is conducted through “trabecular meshwork”—the spongy tissue present near the cornea.), and surgery.
What is the treatment for acute angle-closure glaucoma?
The treatment for acute angle-closure glaucoma is to lower down eye pressure with the help of eye drops and oral medications. However, the definitive treatment is to perform a laser iridotomy wherein a hole is carefully placed in the iris to allow fluid drainage inside the eye.
How does ocular hypertension treatment work?
Ocular hypertension is a situation where intraocular pressure treatment is suggested. Intraocular pressure is the pressure inside the eye and in the case of ocular hypertension, it is much higher. If a patient is suspected of ocular hypertension, then there is a higher risk of developing glaucoma. For ocular hypertension treatment, the doctors generally suggest eye drops.
How can I determine if I have glaucoma?
Glaucoma symptoms don't generally show up until it’s too late. The signs vary with the type of glaucoma. In the case of primary open-angle glaucoma, you will notice vision loss, which means that your optic nerve is damaged. Alternatively, in the case of acute angle-closure glaucoma, your vision will be blurred, you will see rings around the lights and the eyes might turn red.
