What is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia (man boobs) is a condition in young men, usually, around puberty, where they have abnormally large breasts. It could be a small amount of prominence of the nipple to a more obvious female-like breast, that results from an imbalance of hormones in the body. The breast tissue under the nipple starts to grow often accompanied by deposition of fat around it.

Various causes of Gynecomastia condition:

Though the cause of gynecomastia is usually unknown, genetic factors, obesity, certain medications, anabolic steroids, and certain diseases like chronic liver failure are some of the causes of gynecomastia.

Though, observation and reassurance are good enough in most cases, medical treatment or surgery are recommended in selected cases.

Appearance is the classical complaint.

The social stigma associated with embarrassment to wear a fitting t-shirt or to take off one's shirt in public can cause psychological issues and mental discomfort.

Diagnostic procedures of Gynecomastia condition:

Blood Test

A blood sample is used for the test to determine how much of each hormone is in the body.

Imaging Tests

To get a clear picture of the enlarged breasts, tests like X-rays, CT scans, MRI scans, etc. are suggested. These tests help the gynecomastia doctor determine what the tissues are.

Various grades of severity of the condition:

Treatment options that are involved in treating the condition:

Surgical Treatment for Gynaecomastia:

  • Gynecomastia can be treated permanently only by surgery.
  • This may be by liposuction, open surgery, or, more commonly, a combination of both, depending on the fat vs stromal component.
  • The gynecomastia specialists always perform liposuction to remove the excess breast fat and contour the chest wall.
  • A hidden incision removes the gland tissue to minimize scarring.
  • The excess loose skin after the gynaecomastia surgery is allowed to shrink using compression garments.
  • In higher grades of gynecomastia, larger incisions with more visible scars may be required.
  • After gynecomastia surgery, the two main side effects are post-operative pain and the presence of scars on the chest.
  • By 3-6 months after surgery, the scars are practically invisible in most cases.
  • Sometimes contour irregularities may be visible after the swelling subsides.
  • Small irregularities can be taken care of secondarily after a few months under local anaesthesia.
  • Most patients experience a reduction or loss of sensation in the treated areas, but this is almost always temporary.
  • Most patients can return to work within 5-7 days after their gynecomastia surgery.
