Dr. K S Jayakumar completed his undergraduate training (MBBS) at Stanley Medical College, Chennai in 1994 and worked as a Medical officer in Stanley Medical College Hospital and Apollo Hospitals, Chennai. Then he went to the United Kingdom (UK) for postgraduate training. In the UK, he underwent structured medical training under expert guidance and supervision, and during this time, he passed his membership exam and became a member of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP), London in 1999.

He then underwent further postgraduate training (NTN/VTN) in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology at various teaching hospitals and tertiary referral centers including University Hospital Aintree, Royal Liverpool University Hospital, Liverpool and Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge. As part of his specialist registrar (SpR) training scheme, he acquired specific skills and knowledge in various fields of Internal Medicine and Rheumatology including paediatric & adolescent rheumatology and immunology.

He had successfully completed his postgraduate training with the Eastern Deanery, Cambridge, UK in 2009 and obtained ‘Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT/CCST) in Internal Medicine & Rheumatology and gained entry into the Specialist Register of General Medical Council (GMC), UK.

He had actively participated in a number of research projects involving renowned European early rheumatoid arthritis cohort (ERAS – Early Rheumatoid Arthritis Study) and Early Rheumatoid Arthritis Network (ERAN) and had also been a principal and co-investigator for a number of multicentre international clinical trials. He completed his thesis in 2009 and was conferred ‘Doctorate in Medicine’ (MD) in Rheumatology by the University of Hertfordshire, UK. He presented his study results in various regional, national and international conferences and has had several publications in peer-reviewed journals.

He worked as a consultant rheumatologist (substantive) in London and Birmingham, UK since August 2009 and moved back to India for good in May 2015. Whilst working in the UK, he came to India on a sabbatical (2010 & 2012/13) and worked as a consultant rheumatologist for few months in Coimbatore and Chennai (KMCH, MIOT, and Fortis Malar Hospital).

During his tenure in the UK, Dr Jayakumar had actively conducted a number of multidisciplinary clinics including early arthritis clinic, combined back pain and orthopaedic clinics, CTD and vasculitis clinic, metabolic bone disease, and osteoporosis clinic. He also provided a regional ‘Interstitial Lung Disease’ (ILD) service at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital along with other multidisciplinary team members. He is also actively involved in teaching activities and is currently a Senior Honorary Clinical Lecturer at the University of Birmingham, UK.

Dr Jayakumar has joined Sri Ramakrishna hospital as a full time consultant rheumatologist and immunologist (SRH) in July 2015 and started the ‘Department of Rheumatology & Immunology’. He is very passionate about developing rheumatology and immunology services locally and is ambitious to develop a ‘state-of-the-art’ Centre for Arthritis and Autoimmune Rheumatic Diseases at Sri Ramakrishna hospital with fully equipped multidisciplinary services and to promote this into a tertiary referral centre.
