What is interventional
radiology?

Interventional radiology is a medical specialty that performs a wide range of processes to acquire certain images of the body. These images are carefully interpreted by an interventional radiologist in order to identify injury and disease, as well as to execute a variety of interventional medical procedures. IR is also a great innovation to treat a few complex medical conditions without any major surgical procedures.

Interventional radiology plays a major role in both diagnostic and treatment procedures. One such treatment used in interventional radiology is the endovascular coiling.

What is endovascular coiling?

Endovascular coiling surgery is also referred to as endovascular embolization. Endovascular coiling tends to treat brain aneurysm without performing any major surgery or opening the skull. It is a minimally invasive procedure. This is a procedure performed to block the blood supply to an aneurysm. An aneurysm is a balloon-like formation that occurs due to a weakened artery wall. Most aneurysms tend to burst causing life-threatening bleeding and also brain damage. When the blood supply to an aneurysm is interrupted, it reduces the chances of rupture.

Who needs endovascular coiling?

Majority of the patients can undergo endovascular coiling. In both intact and ruptured aneurysms this procedure can be performed. Patients are usually young adults and elderly individuals. The conclusive decision of whether an individual can undergo endovascular coiling entirely depends upon the size and shape of the aneurysm, the place where it is located, the age of the individual along with health conditions associated with the aneurysm. It is an ideal procedure to be chosen over open surgery for individuals whose health is not in a good shape. In case you are experiencing any signs of brain aneurysm, reach out to endovascular coiling hospital in Coimbatore.

Few hours before the procedure you may be advised by your doctor to avoid certain foods. General Anesthesia is involved in the procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Endovascular coiling surgery is a minimally invasive procedure where a thin catheter is passed through the femoral artery into the aorta and thin wires composed of platinum are passed through the catheter and into the aneurysm and coils inside.

In unruptured aneurysm cases the recovery is usually under a month. Ruptured aneurysms usually take 4 to 5 months to recover. The recovery may also depend on the location of the aneurysm.

The complete procedure usually takes about 30 to 40 minutes. This also depends on the location of the aneurysm.

The patient undergoing the endovascular brain surgery will be given anesthesia to avoid any discomfort through the procedure.

The individual may be checked for any leakages or rupture in the aneurysm after the procedure and probably in an hour they are discharged. In case there is a leak, the individual needs to stay at the hospital for a couple of weeks.
