It’s not really simple to try to discern the difference between what the expected behaviors are and what the signs of a mental disorder might be. There is no simple evaluation that will let people know whether there is a mental disorder or what behavior and feelings might be typical behavior of a person or the result of a physical condition.
Here’s what you should watch out for:
- Excessive fear or worry
- Feeling unnecessarily upset or low
- Confused thought or difficulties with paying attention and learning
- Extreme mood swings, like uncontrollable “highs” or euphoric experiences
- Extended or powerful feelings of irritability or rage
- Abstaining from having a social life
- Difficulties in understanding or communicating with other people
- Sleeping habit changes or experiencing exhaustion and low energy
- Shifts in eating habits, like increased hunger or loss of appetite
- Changes in the sex drive
- Suicidal thoughts
- Inability to carry out everyday tasks or to cope with daily challenges and pressures
