India is home to 77 million diabetics, and in the next 25 years, this figure is projected to grow to 134 million. Diabetes definitely needs a multidimensional approach, being a lifestyle disorder with multidimensional causative factors. In addition to diabetic patients, India also has a huge burden of pre-diabetics. If targeted with knowledge on the right lifestyle options to help keep blood sugar, lipids, and blood pressure under control, at least a third of people can be prevented from getting diabetes.
New Treatments
- Bydureon: The 2 mg Bydureon injection is provided in addition to customized diet and exercise in people who have been prescribed type 2 diabetes medicines for blood sugar control.
- Humalog: Humalog (insulin lispro) is a man-made insulin. It is a quick-acting insulin whose effects commence 15 minutes after injection. It keeps working for 2 to 4 hours.
- Lantus: While short-acting insulins like Humalog are prescribed at mealtimes, long-acting insulins like Lantus keep the blood sugar levels stable throughout the day. It can also be used to treat children 6 years and older with type 1 diabetes.
- Trijardy XR: In order to treat type 2 diabetes, Trijardy XR blends three effective drugs. By changing the way their body absorbs insulin, Metformin reduces blood sugar levels for patients; extended-release forms of the drug do this more efficiently and more steadily, so they can be administered once a day rather than several times. Trijardy XR also includes empagliflozin, a drug more generally referred to by its trade name Jardiance, which allows the kidneys to urinary extract glucose (blood sugar) from the bloodstream. Linagliptin is the third drug. It makes the pancreas produce more insulin and decreases the amount of glucose released in the liver.
