COPD has been the biggest challenge for Pulmonologists. From no treatment and diagnosis to managing the condition effectively, the research and studies around COPD have come a long way in the past few decades. The linkage between COPD and an increased number of white blood cells is well established. However, the underlying cause has eluded scientists till now.
Recent Findings
Recent studies have thrown up some exciting results. Targeting and blocking Granulocyte-CSF, a crucial protein responsible for enhancing white blood cells, seems to be a potential treatment for COPD and related medical issues.
There is a genuine chance of finding a cure for COPD. Immunologists and Pulmonologists are pretty excited about this development. Other significant findings include:
- Association between air pollution and COPD,
- Better diagnosis using a spirometer(not effective for early stages),
- Non-invasive parametric response mapping to diagnose early damage of bronchioles, and Effectiveness of exercise for COPD patients.
The new findings promise better diagnosis, more effective prevention, and a possible cure for incurable inflammatory lung disease. Hence, offering great hope for both COPD patients and Pulmonologists.
