What is a PET scan? How does the PET scan work?

Positron emission tomography (PET) scans detect early signs of cancer, heart disease and brain disorders. An injectable radioactive tracer detects diseased cells.

You receive an IV injection of a radiotracer that contains a safe amount of a radioactive drug. The most commonly used radiotracer is fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG).

A combination PET and CT scan produces 3D images for a more accurate diagnosis.

What aspects can be viewed through PET Scan?

Doctors perform PET/CT scan be useful to view various aspects few ofthem include:

  • Detect cancer and/or makea diagnosis.
  • Determine whether a cancer has spread in the body.
  • Assess the effectiveness of treatment.
  • Determine if a cancer has returned after treatment.
  • Evaluate Prognosis
  • Assess tissue metabolism and viability.
  • Determine the effects of a heart attack myocardial infarction on areas of the heart.
  • Identify areas of the heart muscle that would benefit from angioplasty or coronary artery bypass surgery (in combination with a myocardial perfusion scan).
  • Evaluate brain abnormalities such as memory disorders like Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Seizures and other central nervous system disorders.
  • Map normal human brain and heart function.

How can PET scan be useful to detect health problems?

PET CT scan procedure can be used to detect a variety of problems in the body. Normally the PET scan isperformed to analyze the condition of:

Cancer:

Cancer cells are rapidly growing abnormal cells which tend to have higher metabotism rate compared to normal cells. So to the high metabolic rate these cells release chemicals which appear as spots during the screening process. Accordingly your specialist may recommend cancer treatment to you.

PET scans can show the areas where the blood flow is affected. This is viewed as the healthy tissue with proper blood flow tends to absorb more tracer than the unhealthy or damaged tissues. Each level has a different color and range of brightness can help the doctor in deciding the severity of the disease and get a clear view of the treatment to be provided

Brain Defects:

Glucose is considered the main functioning factor of the brain.

The tracers introduced for the PET scan attach to the glucose components in the brain.

So the areas which utilize the highest level of glucose and the ones which utilize less can be easily detected through scanning.
