What is Neonatal cardiac surgery?

What should you know about it?

Neonatal cardiac surgery refers to heart surgeries performed on newborns, typically within the first month of life, to correct congenital (present at birth) heart defects. These procedures are often critical and lifesaving, aiming to repair structural problems in the heart such as holes in the heart walls, blocked valves, or abnormal connections between blood vessels and the heart.

What is the Arterial switch procedure?

What should you know about it?

The Arterial switch procedure is a type of heart surgery used to treat newborn children born with D-TGA (transposition of the great arteries), a condition where the main blood vessels connected to the heart are switched. Normally, the pulmonary artery carries low-oxygen (blue) blood to the lungs, and the aorta carries oxygen-rich (red) blood to the body. When these vessels are in the wrong positions, the baby’s blood flow is disrupted. The surgery helps correct this so the heart can pump blood to the right blood vessels to the lungs and to the rest of the body.

What is the Rashkind procedure?

What should you know about it?

The Rashkind procedure, also known as balloon atrial septostomy, is a cardiac catheter–based procedure performed mainly in newborns with certain congenital heart defects, especially transposition of the great arteries. In these conditions, oxygenated and deoxygenated blood cannot mix properly, leading to severe cyanosis. During the procedure, a catheter with an inflatable balloon is passed through a vein into the heart and positioned in the left atrium. The balloon is inflated and then rapidly pulled back through the atrial septum, creating or enlarging an opening between the right and left atria. This opening allows better mixing of oxygen-rich and oxygen-poor blood, thereby improving oxygen delivery to the body.
