When is dialysis needed?

The kidneys are responsible for the purification of blood by removing excess waste and fluid from the body. When the kidneys do not work properly and are failing, it becomes a life-threatening condition. In these cases, an artificial kidney machine is used to do the work of the kidneys. It purifies the blood through filtration and it save the life of the patient and helps them to lead near normal life. This process is called dialysis.

Common causes of
kidney failure include

High blood pressure

Kidney inflammation

Urinary tract obstruction

Kidney cysts
(polycystic kidney disease)

What are the symptoms that necessitate kidney failure dialysis?

Accumulation of body waste and fluids could lead to severe complications. Seek immediate treatment in the event one experiences warning signs and symptoms of acute or chronic kidney failure. Here are some symptoms:

Severe Itching

Breathing Difficulty

Tremor Fits

How does the dialyzer clean and filter blood?

The dialyzer has two parts, one for your blood and one for a cleansing fluid called dialysate. A thin membrane separates these two parts. Waste products like urea, creatinine, potassium and extra fluid in the blood are passed through the membrane and are washed away.

Hemodialysis can help your body to maintain the proper balance of fluids and various minerals.

Dialysis Patient Care at Sri Ramakrishna Hospital

  • The Hemodialysis process involves the use of an ‘artificial kidney’ or dialyser using hemodialysis machine. This machine filters the chemicals and waste from the blood. In order for the blood to flow to the machine, a ‘vascular access’ will need to be created. This vascular access is an entrance to a blood vessel which can be used to connect the machine to you. The vascular access can be created through various ways:
  • Connecting an artery to a vein in order to create a larger blood vessel. This is known as a fistula.
  • Grafting an artery and a vein using a soft plastic tube.
  • A thin plastic tube called double lumen catheter can be inserted into a large vein located in the groin or neck region to create a temporary access.
  • Depending on the patient’s condition, dialysis may need to be performed for a longer or slightly shorter duration. The vascular access may be temporary or permanent.
  • At the hemodialysis center, during each session, the patient is connected to the dialysis machine. Blood flows into the machine where the extra fluid and waste is removed from it and purified blood returns to the body.

How long will each hemodialysis treatment last?

In the hemodialysis center at Sri Ramakrishna Hospital, the hemodialysis process is usually done 3-4 times per week for about 3 hours at a time.

The hemodialysis specialist you consult with will give you a prescription that tells you how much treatment you need. Your dialysis care team will monitor your treatment with regular lab tests to ensure you are getting the right amount of hemodialysis to live comfortably.

People that choose to do hemodialysis at home may do dialysis treatment more frequently for about 4-7 times per week with shorter hours each time.
