Intraoperative Neuromonitoring (IONM)
When the brain, spinal cord, or nerves of a patient are at risk of being damaged during surgery, this monitoring is referred to as intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM). One of the goals of IONM is to prevent damage to the neurological system.
Many different diagnostic procedures exist for assessing nervous system health. Standard IONM procedures involve stimulating the nerve system with electrical current and then monitoring the resulting changes.
