What is a Discectomy?

Discectomy is a procedure that removes the damaged portion of a disc in the spine that protrudes through its thick outer coating. Nerves in the area can be irritated or compressed by a herniated disc.

A discectomy test treats pain that radiates down the arms or legs from a compressed nerve. Back and neck discomfort are less likely to benefit from herniated disc surgery than other types of pain.

Why is Discectomy Surgery recommended ?

If alternative treatments have failed to alleviate your symptoms and you are a good candidate for surgery, your orthopedic spine specialist may consider a discectomy.

  • Herniated discs compress nerve roots.
  • Disabilities that make it difficult to get around and carry out everyday duties
  • Control of the bowels or the bladder, which indicates that several nerves are squeezed in the spine

Stages of disc herniation that can lead to Discectomy Surgery:

Disc Degeneration:

Age-related chemical changes make discs dry, sagging, and weak, but not enough to herniate. MRIs can show these alterations, which are generally symptomless.

Disc Prolapse:

The disc bulges, which can make the spinal canal a little bit smaller. This is also called a slipped or bulging disc.

Extrusion:

The soft, gel-like nucleus pulposus breaks through the annulus fibrosus but stays in the disc.

Disc Sequestration:

This occurs when the jelly-like nucleus pulposus is squeezed out and dragged away from the disc. When a disc splits, the nucleus pulposus enters the spinal canal.

Diagnostic procedures that can be performed before Discectomy:

X-ray :.

This test looks at your spine's bones and how they fit together. It can tell if you have a spinal fracture or not.

MRI Scans :

Your surgeon can see the soft tissue around your spine with this test. Most likely, your herniated disc will be diagnosed with an MRI.

CT scan:

This test gives your doctor a three-dimensional image of your spinal bones to rule out fractures or other bone abnormalities that could be causing your spinal pain.

EMG Test:

With an EMG, you can find out which nerve or nerves are affected by your herniated disc.

Different ways to perform Discectomy surgery:

Open discectomy:

  • A 3–4 cm slit is made in the skin above your painful spine.
  • The surgeon removes muscle and tissue with a microscope to reach the disc.
  • Microdiscectomy is sometimes called lumbar open microscopic discectomy.
  • The bulging disc is removed without replacement.
  • Open discectomy may be part of a larger disc replacement surgery in which the doctor needs to do other procedures, such as laminectomy.

Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) discectomy:

  • This requires a 1.5-cm to 2-cm cut. A tube is put into the cut by the surgeon.
  • Instead of cutting through muscle and other tissues to make the tube bigger, they use a retractor.
  • They put special instruments for endoscopic disc surgery through the tube.

A microscope or an endoscope, which is a camera, is used in MIS. Reach out to a disc replacement hospital in case you are looking to undergo the procedure.
