Sri Ramakrishna Hospital is pleased to offer one of the best liver transplant services in our region for both children and adults who have liver failure and liver cancer. In west and south Tamil Nadu, we have the most experienced team to perform both living donor liver transplantation and deceased donor liver transplantation. Our surgeons and liver anaesthesiologists have been trained in some of the best centres in the world for performing these complex operations. They have been involved in mentoring of other surgeons/doctors in Tamil Nadu to assist them develop their own liver transplant programs, so patients could be assured that they are under the care of an impeccable team for safe performance of these life-saving operations.
Our team comprises of 5 consultant liver surgeons, 2 liver anaesthesiologists/intensivists, 2 pediatric intensive care specialists, 2 highly experienced medical gastroenterologists/hepatologists and a highly experienced interventional radiologist. We are backed up by a team of 10 other highly committed anaesthesiologists and a 6-member enthusiastic Multispecialty Intensive Care Unit (MICU). We work with the best neonatal centre of our region, a busy Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). We are backed up by one of the best diagnostic radiology services of our region who work as a 8-member team, 2 high end CT scan machines and 2 high end MRI machines. Our nuclear medicine service is one of the oldest in our region, offering high quality evaluation of liver cancer by PET-CT technology and pre-transplant cardiac assessment of liver failure patients using Adenosine SPECT that serves as an alternative to coronary angiogram.
While having a high degree of expertise in liver surgery &transplantation, our surgeons also bring in a wealth of experience in advanced laparoscopic surgery. Starting from basic laparoscopic operations like laparoscopic hernia repair for all hernias, our surgeons routinely perform thoracoscopic and laparoscopic operations to treat cancer and non-cancer problems related to esophagus, stomach, colon, rectum, pancreas, biliary tree, and liver. In our experience, we see that teams with surgeons whose expertise combines both advanced laparoscopy and liver transplantation decreases the operational cost of the surgical team, which directly translates into our vision of providing high quality care at the right cost, for a wide variety of gastrointestinal and liver diseases.
We also provide comprehensive care for medical management of liver diseases and have a dedicated Liver Intensive Care Unit (LICU) for pre-transplant management of very sick liver disease patients. Day care therapy for albumin infusion and ascitic fluid paracentesis aim to minimize hospital stay and provide care at very affordable cost for patients with liver failure and keep them in their job while waiting for liver transplantation. A dedicated post liver transplant Intensive Care Unit (LICU) with modern air quality management, ventilators, dialysis lines, continuous veno venous hemofiltration services ensures post liver transplant care of international standards.
Apart from liver transplantation, we perform high volume of following complex operations
For Pancreatic/periampullary cancer and chronic pancreatitis
Whipple’s pancreaticoduodenectomy- with venous and arterial reconstruction
Distal pancreaticosplenectomy- both laparoscopic and open
Frey’s operation and Izbicki operation for chronic pancreatitis
In conditions like portal cavernoma (extrahepatic portal vein obstruction) and non-cirrhotic portal fibrosis, where bleeding from varices is the main cause of death, surgical treatment in the form of shunt operations or devascularization is far superior to repeated endoscopic therapies. Our team has vast experience in performance of this operations, often at low cost that result in not just financial savings, but also lead to better quality of life and early & sustained return to employment for these often-poor patients.
